What’s the Difference Between Nano Brows and Microblading?

Nano brows Vs Microblading

And Which One is Right for You?

So of course, I think that eyebrows are amazing, they shape your face, frame your eyes, and have the power to completely change your look. If you’ve been researching semi-permanent eyebrow makeup, you’ve probably come across several techniques, including nano brows and microblading. I offer both of these here at Ella May PMU, but what actually is the difference between the two? And do they actually offer distinctly different results?

To help you make an informed decision regarding nano brows vs microneedeling, I’ve got all the information here in one place which will explain the differences and hopefully to help you decide which brow treatment is right for you. If you book a consultation with me, I can also talk you through both, including sharing loads of before and after imagery to make sure you are 100% happy with your decision.

The Basics: What Are Nano Brows and Microblading?

Both nano brows and microblading are semi-permanent eyebrow tattoo techniques designed to give you fuller, more defined brows. No more using make-up to fill in your brows every morning or before you go out, plus the effects you can get with both nano brows and microneedling do not just save time, they are going to make you look and feel amazing.

Microblading may be the term you are more familiar with, as it has been around for longer. It is the eyebrow technique I trained in originally when I became a semi-permanent make-up artist, and it uses a handheld tool with a row of fine needles to create hair-like strokes on your brow. Over the years, it has grown incredibly popular because the results can be very natural-looking, especially if you’ve got sparse or patchy brows. However, since the tool isn’t an actual tattoo gun, it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply as a traditional tattoo. That means the results can fade faster—usually lasting about a year, maybe two if you’re lucky.

Nanoblading / Nano brows is a newer technique and uses a machine with an ultra-fine needle to implant pigment into the skin.  I actually like to think of it as microblading’s more precise, high-tech cousin. The nano brow technique can create even finer hair strokes, which some people find looks even more natural than microblading. Plus, because the needle goes slightly deeper into the skin, nano brows tend to last longer (in most cases several years) before you need a touch-up.

Application Style: Tool vs. Technique

With microblading, the hand tool gives the artist full control to create each stroke, so it’s a manual process. While this can be great for some, it also means that the results can vary depending on the make-up artist’s skill. Not all people who offer microblading will have the same level of precision, and if you’ve ever seen botched microblading results online.. well you’ll know what I am going with this! (So, on a side note, if you are considering any type of semi-permanent make-up, ALWAYS check out the PMU artist’s reviews online before committing. Taking a look at social media and making sure they have lots of realistic before or after shots for the kind of style you like is also a must.)

Nano brows on the other hand however are created using on a machine, don’t be put off my the word ‘machine’ it’s actually a very delicate and intricate process, but the machine allows for more consistent strokes because it’s designed to deliver uniform pressure throughout the procedure. That means the risk of human error—like uneven depth or width of strokes—is reduced. Nano technology also tends to be a little gentler on the skin, leading to less trauma and faster healing.

Is Microblading more painful than Nano Brows?

If you’re anything like me, then pain is going to be a factor when considering which beauty treatments to go for. Having had both microblading and nano brow treatments myself, and of course, hearing lots of feedback from my clients, I would honestly say they’re pretty similar in terms of discomfort. Both techniques involve making tiny cuts in the skin so it’s not exactly pain-free, but it’s not the same feeling as having an actual tattoo. Most PMU artists (including myself) will apply numbing cream beforehand which definitely helps. Some people who’ve tried both tend to say that microblading can feel a bit scratchier because of the manual tool, whereas nano brows feel smoother thanks to the machine. However, it’s worth remembering that everyone’s pain tolerance is different, and pain thresholds can also vary in an individual due to factors such as hormone levels, temperature and mood.

Healing Time & Maintenance

After either treatment, your brows will need a little TLC. Expect some redness, slight scabbing, and itching (which you must resist scratching—seriously, leave them well alone!). Microblading generally takes about 7-10 days to heal, while nano brows can heal slightly faster because of the slightly gentler application process.

Long-term maintenance is where nano brows really start to shine. Because the pigment in nano brows tends to last longer, you won’t need as many touch-ups. Microblading, often requires annual touch-ups to maintain that crisp, defined look. For some, this can be a dealbreaker—especially if you want something that’s as low-maintenance as possible.

Microblading Vs Nano Brows – Which One is Right for You?

There are several factors to consider, including your skin type, age, and the look you are wanting to achieve. If you have oily skin, for example, microblading might not last as long since the oil tends to break down the pigment faster. In that case, nano brows could be a better bet because they penetrate deeper and stay put longer.

Microblading is not recommended for mature or very delicate skin. It’s also not recommended for skin that is textured from wrinkles or extremely large pores, skin that is very pale, or skin which has a very rosy/red tone, i.e. extreme rosacea sufferers. It is also not suitable for anyone with extremely oily skin or a very oily t-zone.

Nano brows however are suitable for all skin types with only the exception of extremely oily skin. Nano Brows can provide a more natural looking result with less trauma to the skin. Because of this, hairstroke / nano brows are also suitable for people with mature skin, whereas microblading is not.

If you’re someone who wants the most natural-looking brows possible and you’re willing to invest in a treatment that could last a few extra years, nano brows are probably your best choice.

At the end of the day, both techniques offer beautiful, natural-looking results—if done by the right artist. So, if you’re feeling unsure, maybe try consulting with a few professionals who offer both services. They can guide you based on your skin, desired outcome, and personal preferences.
